Spaniels

  • Chasing

Whether it be birds, rabbits or leaves, anything fast moving is fair game for a chase and although chasing can be a fun game, when Spaniels don’t stop the chasing and keep running (which in itself can be a danger) they also tend to ignore any recall attempts to continue their new obsession.

  • Hunting

Spaniels love to get their nose down and if they find something interesting, then even better. The constant looking for something creates a ‘buzz’ similar to the chasing issue and as with chasing, this can lead to not listening to recall.

  • Ball Obsessive

In contrast to chasing and hunting issues, ball obsessive Spaniels are paying attention to you but they aren’t interested in anything else other than the ball. Any form of obsessive behaviour is not what you want your dog to be doing and although they are paying attention to you, they aren’t listening and just want the ball.

What were they bred for?

Spaniels are bred mainly to hunt ahead of their owner, to nudge and flush the wild game and then retrieve shot game. They are able to work on land and in water.

They love to hunt in cover.
