HPRs

( Hunt Point Retrieve)

  • Hunting

HPRs love to get their nose down and if they find something interesting, then even better. The constant looking for something creates a ‘buzz’ similar to the chasing issue and as with chasing, this can lead to not listening to recall.

  • Stealing

Being a retrieving breed, HPRs love having something in their mouths. This often means they will steal things to carry around and can lead to an unwanted game of chase to get what they have stolen back.

  • Recall

Whether they are interested in people or dogs near by them, birds, or just a smell that catches their attention, HPRs are more interested in the ‘whats’ going on’ in the environment than paying attention to you. They will ignore recall unless you are lucky enough for there to be nothing of interest going on around them.

What were HPRs bred for?

HPR is an abréviation of Hunt Point Retrieve; the three roles these versatile dogs have been bred to carry out.

They have a wider ranging hunting pattern than our spaniel breeds.

They can be used on land and water, they are also often used along side birds of prey for flushing prey and for deer stalking.
